When was the last time you were at home with no fixed agenda? Nothing planned, not having to rush anywhere by any particular time, no structure, no deadlines? This is our idea of heaven! What about you? Imagine, waking up knowing that you have a whole day ahead of you that's clear of any commitments. You may slowly get up, make yourself of cup of tea and curl up in your favourite, comfy chair. As you sit there sipping your tea, you may let yourself drift off into a state of blissful, fuzzyness. Occasionally, you may notice some of the familiar, morning sounds drifting in from the outside, like birds singing or cars driving past. One of our greatest and simplest pleasures is to have nothing to do – just to be. To let our brains go into neutral and daydream. Actually, consciously allowing ourselves to space out does our brain a great deal of good. Brain areas associated with complex problem-solving, previously thought to go dormant when we daydream, are in fact highly active during these times.
"Some of our greatest insights come through daydreaming."
This explains why many people say they've had their greatest insights, aha moments and clarity when they've been daydreaming. When we allow ourselves to soften the focus and let information float through a state of open relaxation, things previously blocked in our lives, can start to shift without a lot of conscious effort on our part. Try it some time and let us know how you go. Not recommended when you're driving of course!
It does seem that we don't have enough time to unplug! Just hang out and drop the constant background noise of having to do stuff. For some of us, the only time we feel we can get away is when we actually get away. Away from our immediate surroundings. This is great for taking perspective but if we go away and are still plugged into the things that plug us in – our iphones, ipads and internet, social networking groups – we never have the opportunity to give our brain and body down time.
"There was a time when we had no answering machines. Things still got done."
We remember a time when, if you were out and someone called, there was no answering machine. They'd just have to call back later if they wanted to speak to you. Things still got done, people still connected. Much as we love our technology, the boundary between being available and being not available seemed a lot clearer back then. When do you switch off? When have you let yourself go into neutral and felt okay enough to do nothing, to have nothing planned? – Just to be and see how the day unfolded?
"Even the wildest dreams have to start somewhere. Allow yourself the time and space to let your mind wander and your imagination fly." Oprah Winfrey
